Mythology related to Gudi Padwa
The festival of Gudi Padwa is very popular in South India. According to mythological belief, King Bali was ruling in South India in Satyuga. When Lord Shri Ram came to know that Lankapati Ravana had kidnapped Mother Sita, when he reached South India while looking for her, he met Sugriva here. Sugriva made Shri Ram aware of the misrule of Bali and expressed his inability to help him. After this Lord Shri Ram killed Bali and freed the people of South India from his terror. It is believed that that day was of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. That is why on this day Gudi means victory flag is hoisted.
According to another legend, Shalivahana created an army of clay and breathed life into them and defeated the enemies. This day is also considered to be the beginning of Shalivahana Shaka. On this day people decorate the house with mango leaves. There is a lot of gaiety about it in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
