Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings have had a poor start to the IPL 2022 season. So far this season, it has lost all its four matches. Without a single point in the IPL 2022 season, the defending IPL champions are at the bottom of the IPL points table. After CSK's loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, former India coach Ravi Shastri said the team made a big mistake of letting go of South African star Faf du Plessis. Shastri feels that a player like Ravindra Jadeja should focus on his cricket.
Before the start of IPL 2022, MS Dhoni relinquished the captaincy of the team, making Ravindra Jadeja the new captain of the team. Shastri said that if Dhoni did not want to captain the side, Faf should have become the captain.
Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo show 'T20 Time Out', 'I believe that a player like Jadeja should focus on his cricket. If Chennai thinks about it again, they should not have let Faf du Plessis go because he is a match winner and has played a lot. If Dhoni didn't want to captain the team, Faf should have become the captain and Jadeja should have played as a player. Because he (Jadeja) can play freely, there will be no pressure of captaincy.
"Things could have been different for Chennai," he said. Nothing has gone right for CSK this season. Last season's Orange Cap winner Ruturaj Gaikwad has been badly out of form while other players are also struggling to make a mark.
Newcomer Shivam Dubey is the team's current top scorer, having scored 112 runs in the season, while Robin Uthappa (106 runs) is second.
CSK have struggled on the bowling front as well. Dwayne Bravo is the team's top wicket-taker this season with six wickets but has conceded runs at an economy rate of 8.48. Dwayne Pretorius is second with four wickets but the South African was dropped from the playing XI for the match against SRH. Jadeja has only one wicket to his name. CSK's next match is against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
